York has a unique combination of attractions and leisure facilities. It offers something for everyone all year round. You can take the bus into York; it is a great city to walk around. A walk along the city walls will show you where everything is. You’ll find cafes and historic pubs around the City gates and riverside gardens for a picnic.
York’s magnificent gothic Minster is often the first stop. Its size, beauty and stained glass are inspirational. In the Crypt you can see ancient artefacts and the underpinning of the columns originally set down in the 1100’s. Views from the tower are sensational.
From York Minster you can walk to the riverside through Museum Gardens and visit the Yorkshire Museum, or explore interesting shops and art galleries around Petersgate. A little further is the picturesque Shambles, possibly the best preserved medieval street in England.
Kings Staith is lively with riverside pubs and cafe-restaurants. York Boats ply the River Ouse to the Bishop’s Palace. Cross Skeldergate Bridge for the riverside path to Rowntree Park and the ever popular York Racecourse. The 30 acre riverside park, which offers many sporting facilities, was donated by the Rowntree family of Rowntree Chocolate fame.
Back across the River Ouse, follow Dick Turpin’s journey to York Gaol. Part of Castle Museum, it features remarkable historical street scenes. Across the square, see the great views from Clifford’s Tower. A street away, the Jorvik Centre presents the sights, sounds and smells of Viking York. York Dungeon tells of the Black Death and violent history.
The National Rail Museum houses 100+ locomotives. It’s a terrific ‘free’ day out.
Choosing York Caravan Park means evening and night attractions are also open to caravan enthusiasts. You can enjoy the cinema, theatre, riverside pub-restaurants, one of the festivals and cultural events or take in the wonderful night-time views. There’s a late bus to bring you back to the campsite.
York Caravan Park is central for day-trips across Yorkshire. Castle Howard is just 12 miles and you can reach the North Yorkshire Moors and Scarborough in just over an hour.
