The park itself has 50 well-drained hardstanding pitches, all with countryside views, metered 16amp electric hook-up, and space for awnings. The heated toilet block is spotlessly clean, showers are free, and there’s free WiFi, a laundry room, and a small library near reception. Owners Natalie and Darren are known for going the extra mile for guests, and the planting and borders around the park are consistently admired.
As a base for exploring, Overbrook is hard to beat. Dalby Forest is three miles away. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs from Pickering through 18 miles of moorland to Whitby, a trip that’s hard to improve on. Helmsley, Scarborough, and the coast are all within easy reach.
Blue Rose Country Caravan Park, East Riding
Blue Rose is a park with a loyal following, and it holds one of only a small number of 52-week licences in the region, making it a genuine option for year-round touring. It’s nestled between the villages of Brandesburton and Leven on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, with both villages within easy walking distance and each offering pubs with excellent food, a delicatessen, a Chinese takeaway, and an award-winning fish and chip restaurant.
The park is well-equipped with a private walk-in shower and toilet area, launderette and dishwashing facilities, and direct access to local amenities via a bus stop outside the park entrance. Within walking distance you’ll also find a golf course, fishing lakes, watersports facilities, a shooting range, and a horse riding school, which makes it an unusually active base for those who want more than walking and sightseeing.
For day trips, Beverley is close by, with its magnificent minster, independent shops, and regular markets. The East Yorkshire coast at Bridlington and Hornsea is easily accessible, and York is under an hour by road.
York Caravan Park, York
York Caravan Park is the obvious choice for anyone whose primary reason for visiting Yorkshire is the city itself. The park is run by Andrew Wilson and is well-established as one of the most convenient adults-only bases for York, with a half-hourly bus service from the park gate that takes ten minutes to reach the city centre. A local pub and bakery are about ten to fifteen minutes’ walk away.
York needs little introduction. The city walls, the Shambles, the Minster, the Viking-era streets, the racecourse, the National Railway Museum, and an exceptional range of restaurants and independent shops make it one of the most visited cities in England. York Naburn Lock Caravan Park, York
Also run by Andrew Wilson, York Naburn Lock is a newer addition to the Tranquil Parks collection and takes a rather different approach to the city. Where York Caravan Park suits those who want to be close to the urban action, Naburn Lock is a countryside park on the bank of the River Ouse, four miles south of the city centre, in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The Victorian locks at Naburn are a minute’s walk from the park and are popular for walking, dog walking, and simply sitting by the water. The park offers grass, hardstanding, and fully serviced touring pitches, all with electric hook-up, and the facilities building has spotlessly clean private shower rooms with underfloor heating, a laundry, and an on-site shop. The park has its own private fishing on the riverbank and caravan storage is available.
Getting into York from Naburn is straightforward: there’s a bus at the park entrance, a nearby Park and Ride, a cycle route, a riverside walk, and in summer a river bus that makes the journey into the city something of an occasion in itself.
